Pine Cone Door Chimes

This lovely piece will be the perfect addition to your Fall decorations.  Change the bow and it becomes a lovely creation to celebrate Christmas or any season.  Hang it on the door or a wall…it’s simply beautiful!  Most of the materials for this project can be found out in nature, so be sure to pick up extra pine cones, twigs and sticks, because you will want to make a few more to give as gifts.

What you will need to make this:

  • Six pine cones with an eye hook in each. You can watch our video on how to install these into a pine cones here.
  • Several feet of 3 ply Jute cord
  • One pre-made bow from the store or you can make one.
  • Eye hooks for each of the pine cones
  • Floral wire
  • Sticks/twigs bundled together with wire.  You can buy some at your craft store.  Nothing special,  some sticks collected from your yard, a park or a forest will be perfect for this.
  • One extra stick about 8 inches long and ¾ of an each thick
  • Glue gun and hot glue sticks
  • Pruning nippers or something to cut sticks and twigs
  • Wire cutters
  •

How to make this:

Gather all materials needed for this project. Clean and prepare the pine cones before starting.

Install the eye screws into each of the wide ends of the pine cones as seen in the video link above.

The sticks/twigs should be bundled with floral wire as seen in the picture above.

  • Measure and cut a 40 inch piece of the jute cord for the first pine cone chime.
  • Cut a 38 inch piece, a 37 inch piece
  • Cut a 36 inch piece
  • Cut ‘two’ 35 inch pieces for the last two chimes

Even up the ends of the cords and tie a knot two or three inches above the eye screw.

Move up the cord four or five inches and make another knot.  The third knot should be tied at about 16 inches up from the eye screw. .Don’t worry about the excess cord at the end, they will be trimmed later.

The rest of the chime cords will be tied the same way, until you reach the last knots on each.  The idea is to stagger the lengths of the chimes.

  • The last knot on the second chime should me made at 15 inches.
  • Tie the last knot of the third chime at 14 inches.
  • Tie the last knot of the fourth chime at 13 inches.
  • And the knots on last “two” cords need to be set at 12 inches each.

String the six chimes onto the extra stick (which is about 8 inches long and ¾ of an inch thick) just below the last knot on each.

The longest three chimes need to be centered toward the middle of the stick, while the others placed on the outside ends.

Make sure the knots are pulled tight and trim the excess ends, just above the knot (See pictures).

With an 8 inch piece of jute double and tie a knot in the end.

Divide the chime cords in the middle of the stick, three on one side and 3 on the other.
To make the hanger, drape the looped jute over the center of the stick and pull a knot in it by looping it within its self and pulling it tight.

Push all the chime cords to the center of the stick, gather them together and tie off with another piece of the jute cord about 8 inches long.  Tie it tight just under the stick.

Decide which side of the sticks/twig bundle you will make the back of your piece and will lie flat against the door or wall.  Fit the stick holding the chime cords into place where it will be wired to the bundle and wire it as close to the jute as you can to hide the wire (see pictures).

After you have wired the stick holding the pine cone chimes in place, turn it around to the front side and attach the bow using the floral wire and some hot glue if needed.  Enjoy!
