What You Will Need To Stiffen Felt
The Recipe
Make a mixture of approximately one part school glue to three parts warm water. You can eye this or use a measuring cup. Make a small amount or a large amount, depending on your project.
Storing extra
You will most likely have some left over and you can store it for later use. I have found putting the mixture in a jar with a lid I can shake it up to mix it and simply pour back the left over mixture back into the jar after I’ve soaked the felt being stiffened. Make sure to mix it up until it’s smooth. Try to avoid chunks of glue sticking to the felt. If you do get some little chunks, just rub them into the felt with your finger.
The Process
Precut your felt into manageable sized pieces that will work for your project but keep in mind that you want to cut out your final shapes after the felt has dried and stiffened as they felt may shrink. Completely soak the felt in the glue mixture and make sure it’s soaked throughout. Dyes may bleed and you should start with the lighter colors first, when doing multiple colors
Roll the felt up and gently squeeze over your bowl to remove the excess glue mixture. Be careful not to squeeze it to hard as you could warp the felt but do you best gently remove all the excess.
The Final Step
Finally remove your felt and gently lay it out flat on a sheet of wax or parchment paper placed on a flat surface. Place it out of the way to dry. If it’s good weather, you can also put it to dry in the sun. Once your felt has dried, it will be stiff to the touch. If you notice there are wrinkles in your felt, you can place it between two paper towels and press with an iron set to medium heat. Take care not to leave it on the felt too long, as some acrylic or polyester felts can melt if over heated
